How to read a hazard map
How do flood, inland flooding, storm surge and tsunami differ?
Flooding comes from rivers, inland flooding from rain that cannot drain, storm surge from rising sea levels, and tsunami mainly from earthquakes.
Is it safe outside a mapped hazard zone?
Not necessarily. Check your surroundings and the latest evacuation information.
What should I check first?
Check risks at home, work and school, plus evacuation sites, routes and alternatives.
Is a river safe when the current level is low?
Levels can rise quickly due to upstream rain. Check risk maps, cameras, gauges and evacuation notices together.
