Futtsu's Umadashi Festival brings a sacred horse to Iwase Beach on September 20

The Umadashi Festival will be held at Azuma Shrine and Iwase Beach in Futtsu on Sunday, September 20, 2026. According to Futtsu City, the ritual in which a sacred horse runs along the beach is scheduled to begin at 2:15 p.m. The time is approximate and may shift with the day's proceedings.
A traditional ritual on the beach
In this spirited ceremony, a divine spirit is transferred to a horse and young participants hold its reins as it races across Iwase Beach. The rite prays for abundant harvests, safety at sea and good catches, and was designated an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Chiba Prefecture in 2017.
About 10 minutes on foot from Onuki Station
Iwase Beach is about a 10-minute walk from JR Uchibo Line Onuki Station, while Azuma Shrine is about 30 minutes away on foot. Both are roughly 10 minutes by car from Futtsu-Chuo IC.
