Umihotaru: facilities, food and U-turns

Enjoy bay views, a meal and shopping, then return to the same shore. Umihotaru can be a destination in its own right, not just a stop on the way to Boso.

Tokyo Bay views from Umihotaru

The fifth-floor observation decks offer sea views all around. With clear air and good visibility, look for Mount Fuji and Tokyo Skytree, or watch passing ships and aircraft. The scenery is a reason to stop even without shopping. Sunny weather alone does not guarantee distant views; haze and clouds can obscure them.

What is the Tower of Wind?

Look towards Kawasaki for the blue-and-white striped Kaze no To, or Tower of Wind. Officially Kawasaki Artificial Island, it houses ventilation facilities for the undersea tunnel. It is separate from Umihotaru and is not a place visitors can freely land. This unusual landmark supports the road hidden beneath the bay.

A stop combining views and indoor facilities

Start with the fifth-floor views, then head to the fourth-floor footbath or shops, or the fifth-floor dining area. Towards Kisarazu, the bridge stretches across the sea; towards Kawasaki lies the bay above the tunnel. In strong winds, enjoy the view from indoors. Take photographs only from safe stopping places, never by stopping on the road.

5F | Food and views

Restaurants, Marine Court and the observation deck are on this floor. The free Umimegane cinema is another option.

4F | Shopping and breaks

Browse Fusa no Eki, Uminaka Plaza and Umipan. The footbath, indoor sea-view corridor and piano offer alternatives to a meal.

2F–3F | Car parking

Car parking has a 2.5 m height limit. Check official instructions and signs for taller vehicles. Note your floor, direction and parking location.

Food and souvenirs

5F | Clams, seafood and restaurants

Marine Court includes Asari Ramen Namichi and Chi-ba Don. Restaurant choices include Kisarazu-an, Ocean Kitchen and revolving sushi Misaki.

4F | Snacks and shopping

Try Umipan for bread or Yuimaru for rice balls. Fusa no Eki and Uminaka Plaza are souvenir options. Plan the order around your departure time.

Early and late visits

A 24-hour PA does not mean every shop is open. Check each shop's opening hours and last orders in the official directory.

Families, accessibility and pets

The nursing room also supports nappy changes. Ask the information desk about stroller and wheelchair loans.

Getting around

Lifts, accessible toilets and ostomate facilities are available. Part of the Kawasaki-side 5F observation deck is an accessibility exception.

Dogs

DOG Sea Terrace on 5F has an indoor pet-friendly space. This does not extend to all restaurants or indoor rest areas; follow each area's rules.

Ways to spend your visit

A short stop

Note your parking location → toilets → observation deck → snack. In strong wind or rain, choose indoor breaks rather than forcing an outdoor visit. Parking queues and crowds affect timing.

A destination visit

Meal on 5F → Umimegane → shopping or footbath on 4F → U-turn. This is an editorial itinerary, not an official tour. Reorder it around opening hours.

U-turns and transport

Back to the same shore

U-turns are possible from either side. The official guide describes the toll as equivalent to one Aqua-Line crossing. Check vehicle, ETC and applicable conditions. Free parking does not mean a toll-free trip.

ETC and other payments

With ETC, keep the card inserted and follow the signed lane. Non-ETC visitors from Kawasaki pay at Umihotaru; those from Kisarazu obtain a U-turn ticket and hand it over at Kisarazu-Kaneda IC. Follow on-site signs.

Fuel and EV charging

There is no petrol station: check fuel before entering. Car rapid chargers are on 3F for arrivals from Kawasaki and 2F from Kisarazu. This page does not show charger availability.

Without a car

Some Kawasaki Station–Kisarazu Station highway buses stop here, not all services. Check your outward service and last return bus first.

Chiba Aqua-Line Marathon 2026

Scheduled for November 8, 2026, the race offers a chance to run on a road normally closed to pedestrians. It is not a general pedestrian opening. Check entry requirements, application status and road restrictions with the organiser.
